Abstract:

This paper describes the impact of user involvement in a large randomised controlled trial of an intervention that aimed to promote early presentation of breast symptoms in older women. The researchers carried out a qualitative study, involving women in focus groups and in-depth interviews to help with the design of the trial. The women involved included some who had a previous diagnosis of breast cancer and some who did not. The women helped with the challenges around obtaining consent, recommending an opt-out approach. They also addressed the issues around finding and contacting women who developed breast cancer, supporting the use of routine patient data.
