Abstract: This article describes three case studies where patients or members of the public were involved in applied health research. The case studies show that when patients with direct experience of the condition being studied are involved at an early stage, they help to: increase the likelihood of funding applications being successful; improve ethical aspects of the research; increase the relevance of the research for patients.
