Abstract: The author reflects on the recent history of involvement of mental health service users in research. She highlights the potential for involvement to identify research priorities, boost recruitment to clinical trials, to develop relevant outcome measures and define good quality treatments. She suggests that involvement should be expanded to the early stages of drug development, and not be limited to clinical research.
