Abstract: This article reflects on the impact of The Health and Social Care Act 2012 on patient and public involvement (PPI) in the NHS. The authors conclude that the Act weakens PPI by reducing the power of the Local Involvement Networks (LINks). In addition, the Clinical Commissioning Groups with responsibilities for commissioning services that are asked to carry out PPI have no accountability to local people as to how they will do it. The overall effect is to undermine the principle of PPI and to return the power to an ‘unaccountable medical elite’ to make decisions about priorities.
